Jury Acquits 29-Year Old Man of Kidnapping & Rape Charges

An Orleans Parish jury acquitted a 29-year old man of one count each of second-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping last week. The case, filed against Attorney Gregg Carter’s client, involved a woman who reported to police that a man had forced her to have sex with him. A rape kit identified DNA as belonging to the client.

Gregg Carter’s client acknowledged that he had sexual relations with the woman, but that it was consensual. He was arrested in December 2016. After three days of deliberations, jurors acquitted him on both charges. Gregg Carter said his client and family were glad the trial was over and described how one of his client’s family members went broke paying for a $1.5 million bond that had originally been $50,000.

In Louisiana, successful convictions such as these can carry between 5 and 40 years in prison.
